Map Suggestion

Hail,

Just want to throw an idea your way.

A map idea I had was that of a Chinese pre-Third strategic airbase (suitably hi-tech looking just before the third world war) located in Burma. Why Burma? Well, real-world strategic goals for China includes the safe security of its energy and resource shipping lanes that pass India, Burma and through South East Asia to mainland China. Japan and South Korea also rely somewhat on these shipping lanes, so...a strategic airbase in Burma hosting advanced bombers with cruise missiles, etc. In addition, China has and currently is building military infrastructure in Burma, so I'd foresee that to continue up until China has a major joint Sino-Burmese military force stationed together.

So, the People's Empire, I'd imagine, would want such a treasure trove of Golden Age aircraft (or at least spare parts, lost technology and a powerful foothold) back under the Hammer and Star's () control. Realistically, the People's Empire could exert more control over South East Asia from such a position of power and send out brigades to recover resources, tech and equipment.

So, this airbase would, in my mind, feature futuristic versions of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KJ-2000 AWACs, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAK-FA fighters (that's Russian but close enough to whats in my mind), stealth bombers, and various other vehicles.

You could say that the Consortium wants to take the tech for themselves and vape the base to deny its use to the People's Empire. Indeed, you could see pre-Third aircraft in the process of being rechristend for the Force Air (dunno why they're called 'Force' something rather than PLA or a Imperialized version of that tbh); i.e. in progress colour changes, being stripped for parts, etc.

Anyway, hope you found that interesting and useful.

Thanks for your time.

Cheers,
Xarxemas

P.S. I'm a military-enthusiast and thus wrote all that with such enthusiasm in mind, .

Just popping in to say the S.P.I.D.E.R community has taken notice of your project.

While we remain aprehensive to how this will mesh the two genres together, we feel the projects potential and eargerly await new information regarding gameplay aspects.

We contain around 100 members and would like information regarding how you plan to support the clan based communities, we have recently moved from another compainies game which we followed religiously throughout development playing key parts in its beta phases and release.

Sad to say this games main downfall was infact its lack of support for communities and clans alike and i repeat on this train of thought we would like to hear how involved you will be as a developer with clans and communities involved in the game.

destructable enviroment

i was just wondering if the enviroment would be destructable. like i picture a tank shell hitting a wall and blasting it into rubble. i know it's a big thing to ask but i do think that it would improve the game drasticly. it would make the game hugely more realistic, which is what many gamers crave these days. it could also give options for a wise yet rich commander to re-inforce his walls to better protect his heavenly fortress and limit the attackers options.

so i hope this thought goes to heart and you consider it as i believe it would enhance gameplay experience drasticly.
thank you for reading, please post any thoughts or feed back

Nuclear Dawn, described as 'a first person shooter/real-time strategy hybrid', looked exciting enough to warrant over 15,000 unique visitors in the first hour after the initial announcement, and the promise of an upcoming beta build brought the masses in.

With the trailer preparations and raw footage shoots done, we can finally resume our scheduled transmissions. Let’s take things up a notch, as we reveal one of Nuclear Dawn’s most treacherous maps.

Every map in Nuclear Dawn is inspired, and often outright copied, by and from real life locations. The launch map pack will cover a wide spread of real world cities and points of interest. The first one we'll talk about in detail hails from the former republic that was on the other side of a cold war a long, long time ago.

Fansite/Wiki

Ok, so I posted this over at the Steam forums, figured I should do it here to.

I was wondering whether people would be interested in helping me setup a wiki (or perhaps a fully fledged fansite with a wiki included) for Nuclear Dawn to help collect and establish information.

I already have a hosting account with unlimited resources, and am fine for paying for a domain name. I just need to know whether I will have community support with this. We will need plenty of contributors and hopefully we can reach a level of depth that will allow uninformed users to come in and understand the full scope of the game, while veterans can come in and read for hours on advanced tactics, strategies and background information.

I would be in favour of including a fansite with it as it seems Nuclear Dawn lacks in the marketing department, and so all the community we can create the better for the game. Of course with a fansite plenty of help would be needed in terms of content creation, forum moderators, etc etc. I should put forward that this isn't an intent to split a community; rather to help a community grow. All games need a good fansite, and I was amazed that there isn't one for this game already. We can organise and promote the game at a grassroots level that developers don't always have the ability to. As an Australian, this is highly important to me; I need a community down under or else I'm out of a game!

As for the overall website configuration, the only thing I can't do is design (well, I can't script either, but we shouldn't need to); my lack of artistic sense is worthy of psychological investigation, so anyone with graphic skills or has a good feel for design/colour schemes (and can work with css) would be a great help to the project. We will most likely be using a Wordpress setup with a Simple:Press forum plugin (which is highly akin to phpbb2).

So if you like the idea or want to help out hit up the thread so I can get an idea of the support we will have. I would like to get something up as quickly as possible to prepare for the release. If you have any skills you can offer, please tell me as soon as possible!

Respect the Props

There are certain subjects that one expects to discuss in the rarefied echelon of game production. Player models. Weapons. Particle effects and complex shaders. Lofty, technical, intricate issues – humble props would not normally be featured in such glorified company.

However, as it happens, props are probably the single most important element of any level. Sure, each Nuclear Dawn stage is loaded with effects, scripts, particles and animations – but underneath it all, supporting the illusions of prettiness, are good old props.

In game-making terms, just as in movies, a prop is a supporting model: the lonely table in the corner of the room, the broken-down vehicle just out of your sight, the humble empty bottle of water on the floor. A few well designed and expertly conceived props can make or break the sense of immersion and realism of any scene or level.

Going for large community support out of the box

Hello,

Let me preface this by saying that I'm pretty psyched to see a commercial source-based game in the works, especially one with such a cool twist on game play.

Having said that, I thought I would lend my perspective to what large gaming communities (at least ours) look for when contemplating adding a game to our server fleet.

A little background:

My particular community currently hosts over 40 game servers on 8 dedicated boxes (along with a dedicated web server, and a dedicated stats server) we serve just over half a million players per month hitting our servers, with thousands of those donating to provide us with financial support.

Obviously, with those kinds of numbers, one of the things I look for in a game is backend admin support. Any server operator worth their salt will tell you that without good tools to administrate and enforce server rules (and get rid of hackers/exploiters, etc.), you get eaten alive. That, in combination with allowing community-driven content builds a long-term basis for success of a game.

Since you've gone with the Source engine, alot of those features should be already handled via Sourcemod. I would suggest, however, that if your game has any "unique" modifications to the engine out of the box, that you should contact the Sourcemod development team prior to release and give them whatever assistance necessary for them to support the game on day one.

Also, you are in the unique position of having access to the development team of a widely-used stats tracking tool. I would take advantage of that relationship and have a complete Hlstats "package" developed and ready to go on launch day, to include a plethora of unique awards, ribbons, etc. Think of the cross-promotional possibilities of all the users of Hlstatsx who check their stats each day seeing the "Nuclear Dawn" icon added to all those stats-tracking systems. Our stats page gets over 10k visitors per day...that's alot of eyes that would see your game's name/logo.

Just a few ideas.

I wish you the best with development, and hope to add ND to our stable of games soon as possible

The World Cup

Right, I know there are a few Football (or soccer if you really must) lurking around here. I know some of the old crew, if we even exist any more, enjoyed it and I remember having a lovely conversation with one of the Interwave guys about the Premier League, although I hate to admit to the fact that I can't remember who off the top of my head.

I can't find any thread covering the Football so far, nor am I sure where I should put the thread so I'm sticking with the trusty old forums that I know. If there is one, then sorry, please point me in the right direction.

So, I was wondering who's watching The World Cup now that it's all kicked off? As a Scotland fan, I'm a free agent and thus I'm enjoying not being tied to any one team needing to win (or fail). The South Africa/Mexico game was good but I have to say I found the France/Uragry. I missed the South Korea/Greece game though, which was a shame, by all acounts South Korea were rather good.

I know we've some England fans here, but what about the Americans? Are any of you interested in the USA's progress in the World Cup at all? How about the England vs America game tonight? Up for it?

Either way, I'm loving it. International Football is always fun.

Er sorry if I'm posting something stupid... But I'm in the process of building a new computer, and I was wondering if Nuclear Dawn had any requirements for Graphics Card e.g. Direct X11 or anything of the sort that we should know about? Or will Direct X 9 support do just fine? I would guess that DX9 would do considering most games today are DX9 and rarely DX10 or DX11 But I rather just ask straight up and know. (offtopic: the graphics card is my current debated part for my computer I'm hoping to build so this would help since I really wish to play this game when it is released.)
Edit:

System Requirements
OS: Windows XP/Vista/7
Processor: Pentium IV 3.0 Ghz or higher
Memory: 1 GB Ram or higher (2GB for Vista/7)
Graphics: DirectX 9.0c compatible video card
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card
Controller Support: Yes

So, Nuclear Dawn is going to blend RTS and FPS in titillating ways that no game has pulled off before. It's set in post-apocalyptic real-world cities, and it features a carefully balanced class-based combat system that will rain fiery strategy on the spawn campers and tea-baggers out there.

It takes more than awesome to make a game, however, so here's a more detailed look at some of Nuclear Dawn's other features:

Colonel,

The Emperor desires the return of a strategic airbase built prior to the War in Burma, designated the Myanmar PLA 201 Airbase . It is believed to house many relics and technologies critical to the modernization of our air forces, and the perfect location for Imperial expansion into South East Asia.

Mobilize a battalion from the 15th Brigade and receive personnel from the 107th Armoured Brigade and the 33rd Frontal Aviation Brigade, and conduct a strategic airlift of your forces at the coordinates provided by the Southern Intelligence Collective.

Given the Consortium's unwillingness to leave us to our rebuilding and reclamation of our territories across Asia, expect probes from their forces operating sporadically throughout South Asia.

Your Superior,
General Zheng

== == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == ==

Colonel Tang Li turned his attention away from the holographic map and surveyed the airbase from the secondary command bunker of Chengdu Airbase through its bulletproof viewer. The primary tarmac occupied by Shaanxi Y-40 Strategic Airlift Transports and their escorts, their cavernous holds being loaded with tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and nanotech construction equipment. Such cargo would be necessary in reclaiming the no doubt overgrown or damaged base and establishing an impenetrable presence.

His chosen Red Sword contingent kept to themselves, away from the cybernetic pilots tending to last minute flight checks on their rare and elite J-32 Sky Dragon stealth fighters. Checking their weapons, implants and armour integrity with methodical precision, Red Swordsmen had little time or will to fraternize with their lesser comrades. Indeed, Colonel Tang Li had little time for his attached officers, sending them on their way whilst he reviewed intelligence reports from the SIC.

From his command interface, cybernetically implanted into his body and connected by a nano-optic cable to his personal computer, he read the most recent report.

8451//SIC-//-
Consortium intelligence probes have discerned Imperial interest in 201 Airbase.
Expect reinforced-battalion sized contingent of AWD personnel to be deployed from assault ships operating in Indonesia.
Light-Medium equipped troops suited for airmobile assaults.
AWD may wish to assault, steal Imperial property and then destroy 201 base rather than let it fall under the Emperor's rule.
-//-

As ever, Tang thought, the Consortium will never discard their legacy of interfering in the Emperor's affairs. It mattered not, for his force contained an electric mix of armour, infantry and air support, as well as the self-sustainable materials to build a fortress upon arrival.

An officer entered the command centre, snapping to attention and saluting - his face scarred from taking grenade shrapnel stepping from a Long Range Transporter in the midst of a Empire-Consortium skirmish in Japan.

His blade at his armoured side signified him as a Red Sword operative, trained for speed and stealth. Major Xu, the 15th's field commander and de-facto commissar, a student of the Emperor's elite mountain commando school in North Korea.

"Major," said Tang, rising from his desk. "Have our brave warriors aboard their designated transports within the hour. With our schedule, we shall arrive prior to the Consortium, but it will be close. Speed along the remaining checks. I want to be airborne before midday and there at nightfall."

The Major bowed and withdrew, fulfilling his commander's wishes.

Tang motioned for his black uniformed attendants, who carried his weapons and baggage to an awaiting vehicle outside. He looked once more at the map, Chengdu marked clearly within China and the 201 Airbase in Burma. In his Emperor's name, Tang Li would return it to Jiang Di Zhai's command.

Base Basics - Part One

In Nuclear Dawn, commanders are elected players whose task it is to manage and develop their faction’s war machine, from the home base to the outposts that guard important strategic elements, down to the supply routes that deliver key equipment to the troops in the field.

In order to carry out their tasks efficiently, they have at their disposal a wide range of different building types and structures, each of which can be upgraded in various ways, or powered up with special annexes that extend base functionality, to better bring pain to their enemies. For peace, of course.

Without a doubt, the most important building in a faction’s base is the Bunker. Heavily armoured and connected with flying nano cameras that give the a floating bird’s eye view of the battlefield, the Bunker is the one building that cannot be replaced or built anywhere else, which makes it the primary goal of every Nuclear Dawn battle.

During the design and pre-production phases of Nuclear Dawn, a lot of care went into distilling the essence of strategy games, the real time kind, and ensuring that we would be presenting players with an experience that would allow them to focus on the tactical possibilities of building outposts and bases, without getting lost in the impulse of dumping a billion building options on them.

In the frantic, merciless warfare that is every Nuclear Dawn game, commanders need to be able to make snap decisions on how to best protect their troops and assets, without being mired down in pointless technical choices.
